Expert Ratings

Ratings   Vintage Source Flavors
WineSpectator - 87 Details: Lots of flashy mocha toast leads the way for medium-weight plum, fruitcake and spice notes, with a sweet, creamy finish. A crowd-pleaser. Drink now. 80,000 cases imported. –JM 2006 WineSpectator mocha, plum, spice, toast
WineEnthusiast - 87 Details: Clean and smooth, with vanilla and boysenberry defining the nose. Not a complex wine, but one made for everyday drinking; thus the plum and berry fruit is ripe and forward, while the finish is just toasty enough. Flawless even though it lacks sophistication. No high gears but still a good ride. Imported by Billington Imports. 2004 WineEnthusiast berry, boysenberry, plum, vanilla
2003 WineSpectator boysenberry, cherry, earth, oak, pepper
WineEnthusiast - 88 Details: Saturated and extracted, with an incredibly deep purple tint paving the way for manly aromas of espresso, campfire and toasted coconut. The palate, meanwhile, runs a bit sweet, with boysenberry and plum. Soft on the back end, but with enough spine to see it through. For fans of bold reds. 2003 WineEnthusiast boysenberry, coconut, espresso, plum
WineSpectator - 89 Details: Ripe, lip-smacking acidity helps keep the plum, blackberry and boysenberry fruit bouncing along here, with tasty mocha and spice notes as well. Subtle toast, so the fruit really shines. A delicious, forward style with textbook flavors. Drink now through 2005. 54,285 cases made. –JM 2002 WineSpectator black fruit, boysenberry, oak
Tanzer - 86 Details: ($11) Moderately saturated medium red. Musky, reduced nose hints at redcurrant, leather and tobacco leaf. Supple and bright on the palate, with a shy but ripe cherry flavor. Finishes with sweet tannins and good length. 2002 Tanzer leather, redcurrant, ripe cherry, tobacco leaf
WineEnthusiast - 86 Details: Plenty of char greets you, which is typical of a Catena wine; oak is always in play. The palate is ultraripe, with cherry and boysenberry fruit receiving a boost from bold acidity. With nuances of earth and pepper, but ultimately a lean body, this wine steers the course while never overreaching its limits. 2002 WineEnthusiast
WineSpectator - 84 Details: Open-knit, with briar and berry flavors offset by a meaty edge on the slightly rustic finish. Drink now. 41,100 cases made. –JM 2001 WineSpectator
WineEnthusiast - 86 Details: At first the nose is somewhat dull and closed, but patience and swirling reveals black fruit, some wood notes and a bit of rubber. Boysenberry fruit drives the palate. The finish goes heavy on the oak, but there’s also some nice layering. —M.S. 2001 WineEnthusiast berry, brier, meaty
WineEnthusiast - 83 Details: Wood-driven spicy aromas dominate the bouquet, which offers too little fruit and only a hint of clove. Raspberry and red cherry flavors come before a dry, simple woody finish. Given the light, lean body weight of this wine, the oak comes on a bit strong and drying. 2000 WineEnthusiast clove, oak, raspberry, red cherry, spicy
