Product Description

  • The Balvenie Distillery was established in 1893 and to this day has remained dedicated to preserving the tradition, care and craftsmanship of malt whiskey production. It is the only single malt Scotch whiskey distillery that still grows and malts its own barley, has the only traditional working floor maltings in the Scottish Highlands, and has coopers to tend all the casks and a coppersmith to tend the stills. The Balvenie "Tun 1401" is a very limited vatting from the Balvenie's Warehouse 24, one of the oldest areas of the distillery grounds and home to some of the most exclusive casks in Speyside. There are four batches of Tun 1401, each with unique characteristics and ingredients. They were produced under the guidance of malt master David Stewart, who hand-selected every cask and monitored each batch as they married over a three month period. The first batch was created for distillery vistors only, Batch 2 was only released in Europe, Asia and South Africa, Batch 3 was made only for US distribution, and Batch 4 is for travel retail. The Balvenie "Tun 1401" Batch 3 is a vatting of ten casks - seven bourbon casks and three sherry butts - which were distilled between 1967 and 1989. These exceptional whiskies were married for three months in a traditional marrying tun, in order to fully integrate the complex aromas and flavors of each expression. The result is a rich, complex, full bodied single malt with pronounced notes of honey, oak, baked apple, orange, blueberry, nutmeg, cinnamon and dried fruit, enhanced by a light touch of smoke. Only 1,800 bottles produced.

Name Value
Scotch/Whisky "Scotch/Whisky" is one of the worlds' most widely consumed spirits. Its home is the Scottish Highlands, but the varieties of whiskeys range from Ireland and Scotland to Kentucky and Tennessee. The name whisky is a variant on the phrase "water of life". It is distilled, fermented and varies based on the production and grains used. Single malt to blended, the varieties have a large scope.
Single Malt Scotch "Single Malt Scotch" is generally associated with the higher end Scotch whiskeys, meaning its origin comes from one distillery and distilled in a pot still. The malt grain used is always barley in the case of a single malt Scotch.
