Product Description

  • This rich exotic example of Mendocino Zinfandel is the product of superb old vine vineyards that are dry farmed and head pruned. The additions of Petite Sirah, Carignane and Syrah have added layers of texture to both the aromatics and palate. This wine displays dark cherries, menthol and spice, with elements of anise, cocoa and vanilla bean. This wine is a natural paired alongside rich red sauce pastas, filet mignon, or even grilled veal chops.
  • In 1978, veterinarian Dr. Kent Rosenblum and his wife Kathy founded Rosenblum Cellars. Over the years Rosenblum has been hailed as one of the top American wineries and called a “mecca for zin-fanatics.” After years of making wine out of their family home, the Rosenblums took their love of winemaking to the next level in 1978. In partnership with several close friends they established Rosenblum Cellars. With Kathy acting as his assistant winemaker and helping with the crush, Kent made Rosenblum Cellars’‘ first vineyard designated zinfandel. He focused on crafting exceptional vineyard designated wines using grapes farmed from mountainside, head-pruned, old vines. With many wineries touting their estate vineyards, Kent chose a different path, deciding instead to create a diverse palette of fruit for Rosenblum Cellars. From Sonoma and Napa, to Santa Barbara, Paso Robles and beyond, Kent actively sought out the best vineyards and growers in California. Kent personally oversees every wine produced at Rosenblums facilities. By picking riper fruit to manage tannin bitterness, and the use of more than 30 strains of yeast from around the world, as well as barrels from 55 different coopers in the United States, France, Hungary, Australia and Russia, Kent and his team work constantly to perfect their methods. This unique approach has culminated in a diverse portfolio of award-winning wines in several categories, including its Reserves, Vineyard Designates, Appellation Series and Cuvée Series.

CGCW - 91 Details: 15% Petite Sirah; 5% Carignane. Rosenblum's fascination with high ripeness is once again clear here, yet the wine is held back from the brink of uncontrolled late-harvest excess and is instead rich in very deep and well-defined blackberry fruit with plentiful oak spice sweetening the mix. It is full and fleshy in the mouth, and its ample back-palate tannins provide a firming assist that makes it easy to predict that it will grow into its best only after a few years have past. 2005 CGCW blackberry, oak, spice
CGCW - 89 Details: 14% Petite Sirah; 9% Carignane. At 15.5%, this is one delivers one of the lower alcohols within the familial grouping, but it is nonetheless very much oriented to ripeness and to sweet, cocoa and chocolate overlays that come close to smothering its fruit. That a fair dose of the wine's compact blackberryish fruit hangs on across the palate lifts this one into contention, and it will be an easy mate to barbecued meats. 2004 CGCW chocolate
CGCW - 89 Details: While adhering to the themes of unabashed ripeness that are central to so many of Rosenblum's latest Zins, this very rich offering finds unexpected brightness and a nice bit of fruity energy coming through its more obvious elements of dark chocolate and raspberry jam. It is every bit as full in feel as it is in flavor, and its closing coarseness is the acceptable cost of its undisguised richness. 2002 CGCW dark chocolate, raspberry
Tanzer - 85 Details: ($28; 15. 4% alcohol) Red-ruby. Baked redcurrant and plum on the nose, with a whiff of nut skin. Fat, lush and very ripe, with flavors of currant, spice and nut skin. As thick and smooth as this is, it's characterized more by its nutty dryness than by its fruit. Finishes with substantial broad, slightly dry tannins and a continuing note of nut skin. 2002 Tanzer currant, nutty, plum, redcurrant, spice
Tanzer - 91 Details: ($30; with 13% carignan and 9% petite sirah) Bright ruby-red. Flamboyant aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and charred oak. Superrich, pliant and large-scaled, with impressively deep flavors of blackberry, pepper and spice. Finishes long, ripely tannic and sweetly oaky. A major mouthful of sweet zinfandel fruit. 2000 Tanzer blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, oak, pepper, spice
CGCW - 93 Details: Rhodes Vineyard. Redwood Valley. 13% Carignane; 9% Petite Sirah. Unstinting in fruit and beautifully composed with lovely oak spice and measured ripeness the servants of its wonderfully deep themes of sweet red berries, this plush, palate-coating Zin is among the winery's best efforts of the year. It is full and very supple in feel with a proper bit of tannin providing spine and a bit a structure, and its alcohols, while evident, never interfere with its persistent, fruit-filled finish. It may well improve with a few years in bottle, but any argument against earlier drinking is a specious one at best. 1999 CGCW berries, oak, spice
Tanzer - 90 Details: Bright red-ruby. Spicy aroma of blackberry syrup and dark chocolate. Thick and spicy in the mouth, with seamless, pliant black cherry and dark berry flavors. Sweetness suggests some residual sugar, but is nicely supported by brisk acids. Finishes firmly tannic and long. 1998 Tanzer berry, black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate, spicy
Tanzer - 90 Details: Bright, dark red. Superripe aromas of redcurrant, dried cherry, clove and orange peel. Thick, sweet and very concentrated; extremely ripe but not heavy. Surprisingly fresh, very long finish features even tannins. 1996 Tanzer clove, dried cherry, orange peel, redcurrant

Wine Terms

United States Wineries exist in all fifty states, but the most predominant (and best) wine comes from Northern California, Oregon, and Washington State, with New York gaining a foothold in the industry. American wines make up about 75% of all wine sales in the US. The appellation system uses the term AVA (American Viticultural Area) to determine where wines were produced, but grape varieties can be planted anywhere in the country. American wineries generally use varietal labeling, and government regulations require that the variety on the label must make up at least 75% of the blend (in Oregon it’s 90%). The words reserve, special selection, private reserve, classic, and so on have no legal definition in the US. Some wineries use these terms to indicate their better wines; others use the words as a marketing tool to move lower quality wines off the shelf.
Zinfandel One of California’s oldest varietals, this grape actually hails from Croatia. Red Zinfandel makes rich dark wines that are high in alcohol and medium to high in tannin. The can have a blackberry or raspberry aroma, a spicy character and even a jammy flavor. Some Zinfandels are relatively light-bodied and meant to be enjoyed young, while others benefit from aging.
California California produces the majority of wine made in the United States. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir dominate the wine production in California, but many other varietials thrive in the California climate. Many fine wines are produced in California using Mediterranean grapes.
